PRESS RELEASE
The All India Democratic Women’s Association strongly condemns the way in which the UPA Govt. has flouted basic Parliamentary norms by announcing a back-breaking increase in petrol prices the day after the Budget session of Parliament concluded.   At a time when the crude prices of oil in the international market have fallen sharply, this is nothing but a criminal act.  No amount of shirking of responsibility by the Govt. on to the shoulders of the Oil corporations can whitewash this.
This hike is the highest ever and, of course, it will lead to another round of price increases of all commodities. There is every reason to believe that the prices of other petroleum prices including cooking gas are in the offing.  Increased rates of transportation and electricity are bound to follow making life for the poor and the middle classes truly unbearable.
UPA 2 has made its 3rd anniversary in power memorable for the economic violence it is perpetrating against the aam aurat and aadmi with no amelioration in sight.  Its total lack of sensitivity to the agony of the poor is illustrated by the fact that instead of using its huge foodgrain stocks to ensure real food security, it is planning to export them.  AIDWA calls on all its members, as also the women of this country to launch struggles, independently and jointly, to force the UPA Government to implement a roll back in prices immediately.
